Orange Regional Medical Center Honors Physicians

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center will host a private, annual Physician Recognition Awards Dinner on May 3, 2013. The event will honor Orange Regional’s medical staff for their commitment to medical excellence. Special recognition will be given to Charles Bou, MD of Orange Anesthesia, PC and Deborah Spencer, MD of Crystal Run Healthcare for their outstanding leadership and medical achievements. 

The 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award is being presented to Dr. Bou. This award is given to physicians who have continually improved the level of patient care, whose professional body of work has served to elevate their profession and who, through personal example, have earned the respect of their peers and the community. Dr. Bou joined the Medical Staff at Orange Regional’s Arden Hill Campus in December 1980. Dr. Bou received his medical degree from Pusan National University College of Medicine and trained in Orthopedics at Kyung-Hee University Hospital in South Korea. He also served as a Medical Officer in the Korean Navy and was honorably discharged after four years. After relocating to the United States in 1975, Dr. Bou completed his internship at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York and finished his Anesthesiology residency at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Bou is certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and is well known for his unwavering commitment to Orange Regional and his patients. 

Dr. Spencer is the recipient of the 2013 Leadership Award. This award recognizes involvement in the development of new or enhanced medical programs, promotion of staff education within the physician’s field and professional excellence. In July 1996, she joined the Medical Staff at Orange Regional’s Horton Campus where she eventually served as Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology from September 2007 to December 2012. Dr. Spencer also served as Medical Director of Gynecology Robotic Surgery at Orange Regional. She was a member of the Credentials Committee from 2002 to 2009 and served on the Medical Executive Committee from 2007 to 2012. Dr. Spencer earned her medical degree from the University Of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Wilford Hall United States Air Force Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas where she served as Executive Chief Resident, Staff Physician and Director of Reproductive Endocrinology. She joined Crystal Run Healthcare in 2002 and was the Division Leader of Women's Health and is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Orange Regional Medical Center Presents Art of the Imagination: Hudson Valley Children's Illustrators Exhibition

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce the exhibition, Art of the Imagination: Hudson Valley Children’s Illustrators, featuring fine art illustrations for children’s books. The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Orange Regional Medical Center located at 707 East Main Street, Middletown on the ground floor adjacent to the cafeteria. 

This vibrant display of original work includes paintings, drawings, prints and digitally created images showcasing seven emerging and highly acclaimed artists in this genre from the Hudson Valley region: Michael Garland, Robin Guiney, Peter McCarty, Steven James Petruccio, James Ransome, Elaine Thompson and Iza Trapani. The collection will be on display through June 17, 2013. 

Art of the Imagination is part of Orange Regional’s Art Exhibit Series, an ongoing program of rotating exhibits which present high quality works of art by contemporary artists residing in the Hudson Valley. 

“Hospitals are places of healing and nurturing and it is fitting to support our local artists and their original works within this healing space,” says Orange Regional’s Art Curator, Sarah Johnson. “I’m very excited about this exhibit and the opportunity to enhance our healing environment for our patients, visitors and staff.” 

Orange Regional’s Healing Arts Program also includes a permanent art collection of over 900 works of art in diverse media, including paintings, photographs, prints and textiles. Art is integrated in patient rooms and common areas throughout the hospital as an essential part of Orange Regional’s healing environment.

Learn Long-Term Healthy Eating Habits

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center will host a free educational seminar “Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery” on Tuesday, April 16 at 6:00 p.m. at Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY. Join Janet Kovler, M.S., R.D., C.D.N., C.D.E., Orange Regional’s Bariatric Program Director, for this information-filled seminar where obesity treatment options including non-surgical approaches and gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding surgery will be discussed by one of Orange Regional Medical Center’s Board-certified, Fellowship-trained bariatric surgeons. 

Orange Regional’s Bariatric Support Group will meet immediately following the seminar. This support group is for both pre- and post-op weight loss surgical patients and is open to the general public. The topic that will be discussed at the support group will be: Psychology – positive thinking/long-term healthy eating.

Orange Regional Medical Center's Spagnoli Family Cancer Center Offers Free Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Screenings

Middletown, NY- In recognition of Oral Cancer Awareness Month, Orange Regional Medical Center’s Spagnoli Family Cancer Center is offering free oral, head and neck cancer screenings. Appointments are available during the week of April 15th at the Community Health Education Center, 110 Crystal Run Road, Middletown. Registration is required. To schedule an exam, please call The Orange Regional Health Connection at 1-888-321-ORMC (6762) by 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10. Appointments are limited and will be made on a first come, first serve basis. Participants of the screening must be over 18 years of age. Screenings will be provided by Mark Driver, M.D.; Lissette Giraud, M.D.; Ofer Jacobowitz, M.D., PhD; Sergey Koyfman, D.O.; Phillip Massengill, M.D.; Donato Napoletano, D.M.D, and Kweon Stambaugh, MD. 

According to the American Cancer Society, head and neck cancers account for about 3% to 5% of all cancers in the United States. This year, an estimated 54,000 will develop head and neck cancers. However, many symptoms go undetected, but, if diagnosed early, these cancers can be more easily treated without significant complications and the chances of survival greatly increase. 

“We’re proud to offer this service to our community,” says Dr. Sergey Koyfman, Medical Director of Orange Regional’s Head and Neck Cancer Disease Management Team. “Early detection is vital to more favorable outcomes for those diagnosed with some form of oral, head and neck cancer.” 

The signs and symptoms of oral cancer often go unnoticed though there are visible signs that require immediate attention, including: 
• Red or white patches in the mouth that last more than two weeks 
• Change in voice or hoarseness that lasts more than two weeks 
• Sore throat that does not subside 
• Pain or swelling in the mouth or neck that does not subside 
• Lump in the neck 
• Ear pain 
• Difficulty speaking or swallowing 
• Difficulty breathing
