Orange Regional Medical Center Offers Lung Cancer Screenings

February 27, 2013

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center now offers a lung screening program to evaluate for early signs of lung cancer. Under the direction of Cleveland Lewis, MD, Board-certified Thoracic Surgeon, screening appointments will start on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Goshen Patient Service Center, 70 Hatfield Lane, Goshen.

The screening is done with a low-dose CT scan, a non-invasive procedure that is effective in detecting the earliest stages of lung cancer. To be eligible for the screening, participants must be current smokers between the ages of 55 to 74 or have quit smoking within the past 15 years, and have had a minimum of 30 pack-years of smoking. The cost of the screening is $300 and is not covered by insurance, Medicare and/or Medicaid.

“Orange Regional is pleased to be able to offer this service to members in our community,” says Orange Regional’s Administrator of Oncology Services, Regina Toomey Bueno. “We want to encourage people who fit the criteria to take a proactive approach in possibly diagnosing lung cancer early to increase their chance of surviving this deadly disease.”

According to the American Lung Association, lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the United States. Lung cancer causes more deaths than colon, breast and prostate cancer combined. An estimated 160,000 Americans were expected to die from lung cancer in 2012.

“Utilizing this type of diagnostic testing for patients with a higher risk of developing lung cancer, saves lives,” says Dr. Cleveland Lewis, Orange Regional’s Medical Director Lung Tumor Site/Oncology Quality. “Based on the findings from the screening, we’re able to recommend appropriate treatment options, if needed.”

Patients are notified of their test results and a lung patient navigator assists patients with positive findings.
