Orange Regional Medical Center Supports World Breastfeeding Week

July 16, 2013

Middletown, NY- World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated every year from August 1 through August 7 in more than 120 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

In support of WBW, Orange Regional Medical Center will be offering its prenatal breastfeeding class free of charge on Tuesday, August 20, 2013 and Tuesday August 27, 2013. The class will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Health Education Center, 110 Crystal Run Road in Middletown. Registration is required.

According to the World Health Organization, breastfeeding is an unequalled way to providing ideal food for the health, growth and development of infants while forming a unique biological and emotional basis for health for both the mother and child. The anti-infective properties of breast milk help to protect infants against disease. Additionally, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding until a baby is six months old, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for one year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant.

Additionally, in support of breastfeeding, Orange Regional Medical Center’s new hospital has a dedicated lactation room located in the ground floor of the hospital. For more information or to register for class, please call the Orange Regional Health Connection at 1-888-321-ORMC (6762) or visit www.ormc.org/CommunityOutreach.
