May 5, 2011

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center will offer free skin cancer screenings at the Community Health Education Center, 110 Crystal Run Road, Middletown on May 24, 26, and 27. Participants must be over 18 years of age, not under the care of a dermatologist or plastic surgeon in the past year and never diagnosed with skin cancer. Registration is required. This program travels to local communities, providing cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure tests and offers cardiac education and support. The results will determine your risk for heart disease. No appointment is necessary for Healthy Heart Screening.

The Hudson Valley provides a perfect setting for outdoor spring and summer activities, yet many are unaware of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States. "Our free annual screening gives the community the best weapon against skin cancer prevention and early detection," said Jessica Gerlach, Clinical Research Coordinator. Risk factors for skin cancer include excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial sources, fair complexion, severe childhood sunburns, family history and multiple moles.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips:
• Avoid the midday sun (from mid-morning to late afternoon) whenever you can.
• Wear long sleeves and long pants of tightly woven fabrics, a hat with a wide brim, and sunglasses that absorb UV.
• Use sunscreen lotions with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.
• Do not use sunlamps and tanning booths.
• Get screened for skin cancer annually.
