Orange Regional Medical Center Celebrates National Cancer Survivors Day

May 22, 2012

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center’s Spagnoli Family Cancer Center will host a celebration of life and mini health fair in conjunction with National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) on Sunday, June 3, 2012. The event will take place at Orange Regional’s main campus located at 707 East Main Street, Middletown from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. This free event is open to anyone that has been diagnosed with cancer, is in treatment for cancer or has completed cancer therapy, as well as their family members and caregivers. The event will include a barbeque, music, giveaways, a mini health fair and, most importantly, a commemoration of the lives of the cancer survivors in our community. Reservations are required and need to be received by May 31st by calling 1-888-321-6762.

“Guests will see how surviving cancer is an attitude about how precious life is and living each day to the fullest,” says Orange Regional’s Administrator of Oncology Services, Regina Toomey-Bueno. “You will find our community’s event filled with joy, camaraderie, hope, compassion, faith and love as we honor cancer survivors for their strength and courage. We will also recognize the contributions of their families, friends and healthcare providers and discuss the issues of cancer survivorship.”

Anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life, is a cancer survivor, according to the NCSD Foundation. Nearly 12 million Americans are now living with and beyond a diagnosis of cancer. Learning about the disease is crucial, because many forms of cancer can be prevented and most cured if detected early.

The Hudson Valley provides a perfect setting for outdoor spring and summer activities, yet many are unaware of the dangers of unprotected sun exposure. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States.

“Our free annual screening gives the community the best weapon against skin cancer prevention and early detection,” said Jessica Gerlach, Orange Regional’s community outreach coordinator.

Risk factors for skin cancer include excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or artificial sources, fair complexion, severe childhood sunburns, family history and multiple moles.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips:

• Avoid the midday sun (from mid-morning to late afternoon) whenever you can.

• Wear long sleeves and long pants of tightly woven fabrics, a hat with a wide brim, and sunglasses that absorb UV.

• Use sunscreen lotions with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15.

• Do not use sunlamps and tanning booths.

• Get screened for skin cancer annually.

Women who have begun or are about to begin a course of radiation or chemotherapy treatment have been advised that they may experience some temporary changes in appearance. The “Look Good…Feel Better” beauty sessions help patients transition through an upsetting, although temporary, period by learning skin-care tips, make-up application techniques and wig and turban styling and more. By the end of the session, patients should have an improved self-image, tips on how to manage their appearance and a sense of support, confidence, courage and community.

“The American Cancer Society’s Look Good…Feel Better program is wonderful,” says Orange Regional’s Administrator of Oncology Services, Regina Toomey-Bueno. “When women feel more confident about their appearance, they often feel more positive and empowered throughout treatment.”
