Orange Regional Medical Center Partners With POW'R Tobacco Cessation Center

September 27, 2011

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center and POW'R Tobacco Cessation Center have joined together to offer patients who smoke, and would like to quit, a two-week course of free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). All patients taking advantage of the benefit will also be referred to the NYS Smokers' Quitline, 1-866-NY QUITS (1-866-697-8487) for free counseling and an additional two-week supply of NRT. The Quitline is funded by the NYS Tobacco Control Program and offers New York State residents free NRT and access to confidential telephone counseling by trained quit smoking coaches.

"Orange Regional has shown a deep commitment to their patients by partnering with POW'R to provide this free NRT," said Susan Lennon, Education & Outreach Specialist from POW'R. "We are thrilled to be teamed up with a hospital that clearly cares for the health of its patients beyond their time of stay. Orange Regional's participation in identifying patients who smoke and want to quit and offering them support, assistance and free medication, will enable these patients to immediately improve their health and ultimately improve their quality of life."

Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in this country. Each year, 443,000 Americans die of smoking-related illnesses. Years of research has proven that patients listen to their medical providers. When healthcare professionals assist their patients in quitting smoking, successful quit rates increase from 7% to 30%.

For more information about Nicotine Replacement Therapy, call Orange Regional Medical Center's Respiratory Therapy Department at 845-333-2000.

Orange Regional Medical Center Offers Free Prostate Cancer Screenings

September 6, 2011

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center is offering free prostate cancer screenings on September 26, 27, 29 and 30 at The Community Health Education Center, 110 Crystal Run Road, Middletown. Registration is required. To schedule an exam, please call The Orange Regional Health Connection at 1-888-321-ORMC (6762) by September 19, 2011. Appointments are limited and will be made on a first come, first serve basis.

The exam consists of a digital rectal exam (DRE) and a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test, each of which takes about a minute to perform. The combination of these two methods is the most effective procedure for detecting prostate cancer at an early stage. The prostate screening program is for men who meet the following criteria:

• Have not been under the care of a urologist in the past 5 years;

• Have no personal history of prostate cancer;

• Are between the ages of 40 - 75

Free Healthy Heart Screenings will also be available. Orange Regional's Healthy Heart Program is a free mobile clinic that assesses your risk of heart disease. This program travels to local communities, providing cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure tests and offers cardiac education and support. The results will determine your risk for heart disease. No appointment is necessary for Healthy Heart Screening.

Orange Regional is a participant in the Know Your Stats About Prostate Cancer campaign, a national public awareness campaign to promote the American Urological Association (AUA) prostate cancer guidelines. The AUA and the National Football League (NFL) have joined forces to launch this campaign to bring awareness to the importance or prostate health and Orange Regional will bring this message to the local level.

According to the Prostate Cancer Education Council, one out of every six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. If detected early, treatment options are much broader, and the chances for a cure are much greater.
