Exit 122 and Route 17 Redesign Project
Due to construction at Exit 122 accessible from East Main Street/Crystal Run Road and Route 17, patients and visitors should expect delays in traveling to and from Orange Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Pavilion.
Traffic alert –Route 17 Nighttime Ramp Closures and Lane closures/I-84 Ramp Closures, Lane Closures and traffic stoppages
Beginning Monday night, July 20, 2015, the NYSDOT will be conducting lane closures in both directions on Route 17 from Exit 121 (Route I-84) to just east of Exit 122 (East Main Street) for the final top course asphalt paving of East Main Street, Crystal Run Road and Route 17 ramps in both directions.
During much of this activity, a Route 17 ramp to, or from, I-84 (Exit 121) and/or East Main Street (Exit 122) will be closed during the night. Traffic will be detoured through these areas and detour signs will be posted.
The closures on Route 17 will take place Monday through Saturday nights until Saturday, August 1 between 7:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. on Route 17 Eastbound and between 8:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. on Route 17 Westbound (weather permitting).
New York State Police will conduct lane closures in either direction on I-84 near Route 17 (Exit 4) during the week of July 20 to July 25, between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. During this time, overhead sign structures will be installed on I-84 (one sign in the eastbound direction and two signs in the westbound direction).
Please allow extra time if traveling through these areas or strongly consider alternate routes to access the main campus of Orange Regional Medical Center or the Orange Regional Medical Pavilion.
All road construction near Orange Regional Medical Center should tentatively be complete by mid October, 2015.
Overview of Redesign Project
The New York State Department of Transportation will be working over the next few years to redesign Exit 122 on Route 17. The approved design provides for the reconstruction of NY Route 17 at Exit 122 Interchange to improve safety and operation to upgrade the interchange to Interstate standards.
The proposed two year redesign project will eliminate the sharp curves on the ramps, the delays at the ramp intersections with Crystal Run Road and East Main Street, the steep grade on East Main Street and the closeness of the exit and entrance ramps to I-84 ramps, which was resulting in a high accident pattern. Overall, the redesign should reduce the number of accidents and back-ups on Route 17 as drivers get on and off the ramps at East Main Street and Crystal Run Road.
