Exit 122 and Route 17 Redesign Project

TRAVEL ADVISORY

      Travel Advisory

Due to construction at Exit 122 accessible from East Main Street/Crystal Run Road and Route 17, patients and visitors should expect delays in traveling to and from Orange Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Pavilion.

This week, traffic patterns will be shifting near Orange Regional Medical Center due to the Exit 122/Route 17 road construction project which might cause slight delays as you travel to and from the hospital. Please allow extra time if traveling through that area or consider alternate routes to access the main campus of Orange Regional Medical Center or the Orange Regional Medical Pavilion.

East Main Street and Crystal Run Road
On Thursday, March 12 and Friday, March 13, the NYSDOT will utilize single-lane alternating traffic on East Main Street at Midway Road through Crystal Run Road near the Orange Regional Medical Pavilion between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Advance warning signs will be installed to alert the public of the traffic restrictions.

On Thursday afternoon, traffic will be permanently shifted onto the new East Main Street Bridge over
Route 17.

Note: Between Crystal Run Crossing through the north end of the project past the Holiday Inn/NYS Police Barracks/Orange Regional Medical Pavilion driveway, the traffic in each direction will remain one lane with no turning lanes. This configuration will be in effect 24 hours/day from Thursday, 3/12/15 until the end of construction which is expected in October 2015.

Route 17
Due to recent wet weather, a planned traffic shift on Route 17 will now take place on Thursday afternoon, March 19, in both directions of Route 17 traffic between I-84 to the Wallkill River bridge. Daytime lane closures on Route 17 will be required in both directions through Thursday (Eastbound 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; and Westbound 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.). Traffic in both directions on Route 17 will be stopped briefly during the actual traffic switch. These stoppages will be performed by the NYS Police.

All road construction near the Hospital should tentatively be complete by October 16, 2015.

Overview of Redesign Project

The New York State Department of Transportation will be working over the next few years to redesign Exit 122 on Route 17. The approved design provides for the reconstruction of NY Route 17 at Exit 122 Interchange to improve safety and operation to upgrade the interchange to Interstate standards.

The proposed two year redesign project will eliminate the sharp curves on the ramps, the delays at the ramp intersections with Crystal Run Road and East Main Street, the steep grade on East Main Street and the closeness of the exit and entrance ramps to I-84 ramps, which was resulting in a high accident pattern. Overall, the redesign should reduce the number of accidents and back-ups on Route 17 as drivers get on and off the ramps at East Main Street and Crystal Run Road.
