As the region's first Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Orange Regional provides the most advanced, accurate diagnostics for your heart and arteries. Backed by an affiliation with Montefiore Medical Center, Orange Regional offers the latest technology, experienced cardiologists and expert support staff.
According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac death due to arrhythmia is the leading cause of natural death in the United States. Cardiac arrhythmia or an abnormal heart rhythm is the result of a too-slow, too rapid or irregular heart beat.
Understanding that the heart's electrical system controls the rhythmic contractions causing blood to circulate through the body, cardiac arrhythmia produces a range of symptoms including palpitations, shortness of breath, syncope or fainting and chest pain.
Performed in Orange Regional's Cardiac Catheterization Lab, an Electrophysiology (EP) study makes it possible to identify and treat arrhythmias. Using EP, physicians can monitor the movement of electrical impulses in the heart that stimulate heartbeat and map each patient's unique electrical pathway. By inducing a controlled arrhythmia with electrical stimulation, the location of the problem can be found and the data can be used to predict the risk of a future cardiac event, such as sudden cardiac death. The best way to prevent sudden cardiac death due to arrhythmia is immediate defibrillation.
Orange Regional has been joined by an elite group of cardiac physicians specializing in electrophysiology who implant ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) devices in patients with cardiac arrhythmia. The ICD devices constantly monitor heart rhythms, keep hearts beating smoothly, and even shock them back into a regular beat, should an arrhythmia occur.
A physician prescription is required for electrophysiology services.
