A mammogram is a safe, low-dose radiographic procedure that images the internal tissues of your breasts. Mammograms are a simple examination, performed as a standard diagnostic study to determine the possibility of irregularities within the breast. They can reveal areas too small or deep to feel which may or may not require further investigation. According to the National Cancer Institute, mammography can detect up to 92% of breast cancers with about 60% of these in the earliest stages. Mammograms are performed by a female NY State-licensed registered technologist, interpreted by a radiologist.
Mammography services at Orange Regional meet quality standards for equipment, personnel and practices according to Mammography Quality Standards Act guidelines. Orange Regional Medical Center has a new ally in the fight against breast cancer - full field digital mammography. This new technology incorporates revolutionary imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp images, is quicker than traditional mammography, has lower radiation exposure and assists in the early diagnosis of breast cancer.
Digital mammography is like conventional mammography, compression is still needed, though women may notice shorter exam times and a reduction in call backs. Digital takes less than half the time of conventional since there's no waiting for film to develop. The crystal-clear digital images are expertly reviewed by Fellowship trained, Board-certified radiologists specializing in breast imaging at Orange Regional's Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center. To assist the radiologist in making even more accurate diagnosis, Orange Regional Medical Center also uses the Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) to provide a "second read" of the mammogram by a computer.
Women, age 40 and over, should have a screening mammogram every year, according to the American Cancer Society. Early detection of breast cancer is vital in the successful treatment of breast cancer.
