The Day Of Breast Surgery

Most recently the Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center was designated by the American College of Radiology (ACR) as Breast Imaging Center of Excellence and is fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, by Board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that the Center has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.  Additionally, the Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center has been granted a prestigious three-year, full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.  As a NQMBC Certified Participant, the Ray W. Moody M.D. Breast Center is currently the only certified participant in Orange County and only one of four in New York State. This distinguished honor represents a commitment to provide the highest quality breast healthcare to patients in the community. The NQMBC program identifies quality care measures, provides immediate access to information and allows breast centers to compare their performance with other centers across the United States.

Orange Regional Medical Center's Breast Cancer Patient Navigator is your knowledgeable and compassionate partner if you or a loved one have cancer. As your personal navigator, your Breast Cancer Patient Navigator will provide personal and clinical experience to help guide you through the wide range of services and treatments available and will help you understand your diagnosis and options available to you at the Ray W. Moody M. D. Breast Center and other Orange Regional facilities.

Fine Needle Aspiration:  Ultrasound guidance is used when the lesion is visible on ultrasound and can or cannot be felt (palpable), and is usually performed by a Radiologist.  If the lesion can be felt, the procedure may performed by a Pathologist.

Bone Densitometry:  This non-invasive and painless test plays an important role in the early diagnosis of osteoporosis.  Bone Densitometry accurately measures the density of the spine, hip and other bones that are most frequent fracture sites associated with osteoporosis.

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy:  Orange Regional Medical Center offers a stereotactic mammography and breast biopsy system that can eliminate the need for surgical biopsies through minimally invasive techniques. The stereotactic breast biopsy system assists in the diagnosis of early-stage cancer by providing women with an alternative to surgical biopsy. Unlike traditional surgical biopsy, which requires a large skin incision, and unlike core-needle biopsy, which requires multiple insertions of the device, the system requires only a single insertion and minimizes injury to the surrounding healthy tissue. The procedure requires only a local anesthetic and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

Ultrasound Guided Core Biopsy: This procedure is performed by the radiologist using ultrasound guidance.

Breast MRI and Breast MRI Biopsy:  Performed on our high-field Open Bore MRI located adjacent to the Breast Center, this Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) technology is for women at high risk for developing breast cancer. Breast MRI and MRI-guided biopsy is a powerful tool for breast-cancer screening which helps patients get earlier and more precise treatments.

Digital Mammography:  Orange Regional Medical Center has a new ally in the fight against breast cancer - full field digital mammography. This new technology incorporates revolutionary imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp images, is quicker than traditional mammography, has lower radiation exposure, and assists in the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Digital mammography is like conventional mammography, compression is still needed though women may notice shorter exam times and a reduction in call backs. Digital takes less than half the time of conventional since there's no waiting for film to develop. The crystal-clear digital images are expertly reviewed by fellowship trained, Board-certified radiologists specializing in breast imaging at Orange Regional's Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center. To assist the radiologist in making even more accurate diagnosis, Orange Regional Medical Center also uses the Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) to provide a "second read" of the mammogram by a computer.

Women, age 40 and over, should have a screening mammogram every year, according to the American Cancer Society. Early detection of breast cancer is vital in the successful treatment of breast cancer.

Education and Support:

Our Breast Cancer Support Group provides support for breast cancer patients.  Friends and family members are welcome and there will be time during the support group to ask questions and obtain support from fellow group members.

Ask your doctor if digital mammography is right for you. Call 1-866-ORMC-TESTor (1-866-676-2837) today and get your mammography tomorrow at one of our convenient outpatient locations.
