Biography Ray W. Moody, M.d.

Dedicated by Bill and Sally Moody to honor the life of Bill’s father, the Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center opened in October 2001.

Upon graduation from Hartford High School in Connecticut, Dr. Ray W. Moody went to New York and graduated from New York Homeopathic Medicine College in 1912, known today as New York University Medical School. He completed his residency at the Genesee Hospital in Rochester. Dr. Moody was the first doctor at the hospital to respond to an emergency call in the new motor driven type ambulance. Previously, a horse and carriage was used.

Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Moody returned to Plainville, Connecticut to go into private practice with his father. Instead he accepted a position at the Middletown Homeopathic Hospital where he served for 40 years. His decision to stay was due in part to the friendly staff at the hospital, where he later met his future wife, who was a secretary.

During World War I he served in the medical corps. During World War II, when there was a shortage of doctors, he was very much involved in the treatment and care of soldiers. This was a time when drugs to treat the mentally ill did not yet exist. Dr. Moody was also interested in social activities for both patients and staff. Each year, he organized a Field Day when patients and staff could get together. His main concern was always the exceptional good care of the patients and he respected the employees for the care they gave the patients.

Upon retirement Dr. Moody remained in Middletown, New York.

Mr. and Mrs. Moody are from Middletown. Mrs. Moody worked as a secretary at Horton Medical Center for about 7 years. She then worked at the Middletown Psychiatric Center, formerly known as the Middletown Homeopathic Hospital, in the infirmary building as a secretary. Mr. Moody also worked at the Middletown Psychiatric Center in the Business Office. This is where they met each other.

For 35 years they lived in Rochester, New York as Bill took a position as a Travel Counselor at the Rochester Automobile Club. Mrs. Moody was able to transfer to the Rochester Psychiatric Center as a secretary. They moved back to Middletown, New York after retirement.
They have always been interested in the welfare of others and did volunteer work at their church and the Middletown Psychiatric Center. They also wanted to do something that would help cancer patients and were very pleased when they found out that Horton Medical Center was interested in opening a Breast Cancer Center.

Being very fond of Bill’s father, Ray W. Moody, M.D., who was a very compassionate person, always interested in the welfare of his patients, they decided to have something done at Horton Medical Center in his memory. In 2001, Bill and Sandy dedicated the Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center to honor the life of Bill’s father.
