Orange Regional Medical Center Among the Nation’s Top Hospitals with the Lowest Heart Attack Mortality Rates

December 13, 2016

Healthcare trade publication Becker’s Infection Control & Clinical Quality has listed Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown among the top 49 hospitals in the nation with the lowest death rates in the 30-days after hospital care for heart attack.

According to data from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Orange Regional’s rate of 11.4 percent puts the hospital better than the national average of 14.1 percent. All of the hospitals on the list have a 30-day mortality rate from heart attack of 11.5 percent or less. The figures are from CMS’ Hospital Compare website and represent data from July 2012 through June 2015, the most recent information available.

CMS consider 30-day mortality rates to be an “outcome of care” measure. The evaluation of an outcome using a standardized period of assessment complies with the standards for such measures as articulated in a scientific statement by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

Rose Baczewski, Chief Quality Officer for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System, of which Orange Regional is a member, said, “Research has shown that heart attack patients admitted to hospitals with low 30-day death rates for heart attacks live longer than those admitted to hospitals that have comparably high 30-day death rates post heart attack. We continually measure and follow evidence-based treatment guidelines which can help patients lower the risk of a second heart attack.”

Recently, U.S. News & World Report acknowledged Orange Regional as a 2016-2017 High Performing Hospital for Heart Failure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The hospital also received national honors from Healthgrades as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention™ in 2017. Additionally, Orange Regional was recognized with the 2017 Coronary Intervention Excellence Award. Healthgrades also named Orange Regional among the top 5% and top 10% for Coronary Intervention Procedures, as well as five-star recognition in this category.
