Middletown, New York – Hudson Valley Hospital Physicians and Orange Regional Medical Center announce that Dr. Mary Ellen King, Medical Director, Palliative Care Program at Orange Regional Medical Center has been selected as one of the 2009 Rising Stars of Orange County — a program hosted by founding organizations Junior League of Orange County, Leadership Orange and the Orange County Chamber of Commerce. These awards recognize individuals ages 21-40 who are up-and-coming leaders in their professional and volunteer lives.
Dr. King was instrumental in implementing and formalizing Orange Regional’s Palliative Care Program, a service focusing on end of life care, in 2007. Over the past two years, Dr. King has continued to build a strong multidisciplinary palliative care team which includes a Hospice Liaison who is available to patients on a daily basis. Additionally, Dr. King recognized that nursing homes often had difficulty putting palliative care plans in place. Applying her knowledge and expertise, Dr. King started a palliative care program in two community nursing homes and is committed to extending the service to all community nursing homes that do not have a program in place
Dr. King will be recognized at the 2009 Rising Star awards breakfast November 19 at Anthony’s Pier 9 in New Windsor.
