Extraordinary Care Inspires Volunteerism

March 5, 2012

Middletown, NY- Orange Regional Medical Center’s Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit will hold a 20th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, March 9 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM at the main campus, 707 East Main Street in the Town of Wallkill. The event will take place in the Rehab Unit located on the fourth floor. The celebration will include staff, rehab patients, as well as members of the Rehab Volunteer Program – a dedicated group of volunteers who have personally experienced the extraordinary care provided by the staff of the unit.

The volunteers that work on Orange Regional’s Rehabilitation Unit truly appreciate how patients feel – the volunteers were once rehab patients, too. As a result of the exceptional care received during their stay at Orange Regional, they were inspired to enroll in the Rehab Volunteer Program that began in 2007. The eight volunteers who currently participate in the program offer tremendous support to current Rehab patients. Their ability to understand and relate to a patient receiving physical, occupational or speech therapy is a valuable component to the recovery process. The Rehabilitation Volunteer Program is coordinated by Program Manager and Clinical Neuropsychologist Dr. Karen Schroeder.

The volunteers assist in various ways such as: helping patients order hospital room service; hosting weekly current event discussions; lending a hand with craft activities; or playing games with patients such as “Jingo”.

“Patients enjoy the humor and support of this volunteer group. The volunteers are a true testimonial to a successful recovery,” says Schroeder. “Having been Rehab patients themselves, the volunteers have a unique understanding of a patient’s experience and are extremely caring and compassionate in their assistance.”

All are welcome to join the Rehab Unit’s celebration. Reservations are necessary. If you are interested in attending, contact Marketing and Public Relations Specialist, Amy Cruz at 845-333-2361 or acruz@ormc.org.
