Orange Regional Medical Center Announces 3D Mammography Technology

October 22, 2015

The latest in breast cancer imaging technology is now available to our community.

Middletown, NY – Orange Regional Medical Center is the first hospital to offer 3D mammography to Orange and Sullivan Counties. Provided at the Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center, this technology is considered to be the latest breast cancer imaging. The Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center is located at the Orange Regional Medical Pavilion, 75 Crystal Run Road in Middletown. The entire purchase of the 3D mammography equipment was made possible by Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation.

“Providing 3D mammography at the Orange Regional’s Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center will provide families in the Hudson Valley another valuable piece of technology in maintaining breast health,” said Sandra Iberger, Vice President, Greater Hudson Valley Health System Operations. 3D mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, is used in conjunction with 2D digital mammography. This technology is proven to be up to 40% more accurate in detecting breast cancers, which can lead to earlier diagnosis. It also detects breast cancers that aren’t found by traditional imaging and provides greater accuracy in pinpointing tumor size and location. The technology can also decrease the number of patients who have falsely positive results, which in turn reduces patient anxiety.

3D mammography takes multiple images of the entire breast allowing Orange Regional’s specialized breast radiologists to see through layers of tissue and examine areas of concern from all angles. It produces 3D breast images from multiple angles using a small rotating digital scanner. Radiologists can move and enlarge the images to view any area of concern.

3D mammography is recommended for all women over age 40 who are in good health especially those who have been previously identified as having dense breast tissue, have a family history of breast cancer or who may be at a higher risk for developing the disease. Also, women who have breast related symptoms may benefit from 3D mammography after evaluation from their doctor.
