Orange Regional Medical Center Offers Breast Cancer Support Group

Middletown, NY- The Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center at Orange Regional Medical Center offers a free breast cancer support group for people newly diagnosed with breast cancer or in active treatment for the disease. The support group provides numerous benefits such as encouragement throughout the healing journey; mechanisms to improve coping skills; opportunities to speak openly and honestly about the disease and its effects; a decrease in stress and depression; a better understanding of what to expect and learning about new medical research, doctors and resources and more. The group meets the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Orange Regional’s Community Health Education Center located at 110 Crystal Run Road, Middletown, NY.

“Knowing the emotional roller coaster breast cancer patients ride, our support group is a valuable and helpful resource no matter what stage a patient is experiencing,” says Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center Manager, Penny Lynch. “Offering this service rounds out the continuum of care we offer at the Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center.”

The support group is facilitated by Michele Worden, Breast Center Navigator and breast cancer survivor, as well as Licensed Clinical Social Worker and breast cancer survivor, Lynnea Dickson. Group participants will be introduced to various topics such as treatment options, post-operative care, the effects and benefits of radiation and chemotherapy and the psychological challenges individuals’ experience. Additional topics include newly diagnosed breast cancer, surgery, post-operative care, radiation, chemotherapy and the psychological effects patients and their family face. The group will also feature guest speakers as well as provide educational materials.

Women, age 40 and over, should have a screening mammogram every year, according to the American Cancer Society. Early detection of breast cancer is vital in the successful treatment of breast cancer.
