Orange Regional Medical Center Supports World Breastfeeding Week

July 16, 2014

Middletown, NY – World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is celebrated every year, August 1 through August 7, in more than 120 countries to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world.

In support of WBW, Orange Regional Medical Center will offer its prenatal breastfeeding class free of charge on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 and on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. The class will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Orange Regional’s Community Health Education Center, located at 110 Crystal Run Road in Middletown, New York. Registration is required.

According to the World Health Organization, breastfeeding is an unequalled way to providing ideal food for the health, growth and development of infants while forming a unique biological and emotional basis for health for both mother and child. The anti-infective properties of breast milk help to protect infants against disease. Additionally, the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends exclusive breastfeeding until a baby is six-months-old, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for one year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant.

In support of breastfeeding, Orange Regional Medical Center has a dedicated lactation room located in the ground floor of the hospital. New moms can receive continued support by attending Orange Regional’s New Moms’ Support Group, where they can share experience, discuss questions with other new moms, exchange ideas and challenges and gain knowledge and skills regarding newborn care.
