Holisitic Therapies: Aromatherapy Services
Aromatherapy is the newest of the holistic treatments added to the complementary therapy program at Orange Regional.
Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that uses medicinal grade therapeutic essential oils that can be applied alone, in its purest form, or mixed with a carrier oil. Essential oils are highly fragrant natural extracts taken from flowers, bark, stems, leaves, roots or other parts of a plant. Different essential oils have different effects on the individual, such as:
- Calming/Stress relief
- Relieves Insomnia
- Decreases PMS Symptoms
- Immunity booster
- Decreases Inflammation pain
- Clears Respiratory Passages
- Decreases Indigestopm & Nausea
- Eases headache pain
A number of oils can be blended together and tailored to a patient’s individualized needs. The oils are absorbed by the body through the skin or through inhalation, promoting a healing energy. Aromatherapy is a complementary healing therapy that, when combined with traditional therapy as prescribed by a physician, promotes relaxation and comfort.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Aromatherapy treat patients?
Conducted in a quiet environment, the patient falls into a relaxed and meditative state as a trained nurse conducts an Aromatherapy session. Patients sit or lie comfortably, full clothed. The practitioner uses a blend of natural oils and gently massages them into the patient’s skin, where they are absorbed by the body. The fragrances in the oils stimulate the nerves in the nose, sending impulses to the part of the brain that controls memory and emotion. As a result, the body is relaxed.
Why should I consider Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy has been known to relieve stress and stimulate the body to produce pain-fighting substances. It has also been used to treat physical and mental health conditions, including infections, depression, insomnia and high blood pressure.
Is Aromatherapy safe?
Aromatherapy is a safe, non-invasive relaxing technique performed by Orange Regional’s experienced, trained nurses. As with any treatment, patients should not undergo Aromatherapy without first consulting a doctor. Pregnant women should not use aromatherapy, as some oils may cause uterine contractions.
Is Aromatherapy available for all patients?
Orange Regional offers Aromatherapy to oncology patients who are 18 years of age and older.
How will I feel after an Aromatherapy session?
There is some scientific data that supports the effectiveness of Aromatherapy, however each person will respond differently. Feelings can range from refreshed and relaxed to comfortable and stress free. Some healthcare professionals find it to be helpful in reducing stress and anxiety which in turn allows the body to heal more quickly.
What are the benefits of Aromatherapy?
Patients in the hospital setting experience many stressors that can weaken the function of the immune system and interfere with healing. Aromatherapy focuses on relaxing the body, improving its ability to deal with stress and pain. Benefits of Aromatherapy include:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Deep relaxation
- Improved circulation
