Brachytherapy for Cancer Treatment

Brachytherapy refers to the procedure(s) of placing the prescribed radioactive source directly on or near the affected site via surgical procedure or catheter. Teleradiography and brachytherapy may be used independently or in conjunction with one another.

Orange Regional Medical Center provides a comprehensive program of brachytherapy including the technology and clinical expertise specifically required for “High Dose Rate Remote Afterloader” (HDR) and “Seed Implantation” therapies

Radioactive Seed Implantation Therapy

Permanent radioactive seed implants are a form of radiation therapy for prostate cancer. During this procedure, radioactive seeds are implanted into the prostate using ultrasound guidance.

In a Permanent Low Dose Rate Brachytherapy procedure, these seeds will remain in place permanently, but eventually become inactive after several months. The amount of seeds implanted (typically anywhere from 40 - 100 seeds) and where they are placed are determined collaboratively by a radiation oncologist and a urologist, using computer-generated treatment plans tailored to each patient. This technique allows a high dose of radiation be delivered to the area with limited damage to surrounding tissues.

There is also another technique, called Temporary High Dose Rate Brachytherapy where hollow needles filled with a controlled dose of radioactive material are delivered with pinpoint accuracy directly and rapidly to the target sightfor a concise amount of time and then removed, sparing healthy tissue. Because of the high concentration utilized in this procedure, some patients may only require a few treatments which can be performed on an outpatient basis.

High Dose Rate Remote Afterloader Therapy (HDR) is an important adjunct to external beam radiation, chemotherapy and surgery. It has proven to be an effective way to treat proliferative cancer disease of the:
