Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Symptoms

The symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia can vary from person to person. Common BPH symptoms include:

  • A frequent or urgent need to urinate, even when the bladder is empty
  • Trouble beginning urination
  • Weak urine flow
  • Difficulty completely emptying the bladder

BPH symptoms tend to worsen over time, so don’t delay treatment if you begin to notice any of these symptoms. If you’re unable to urinate at all, call 911 immediately.

Causes

The causes of benign prostatic hyperplasia aren’t fully understood. Some researchers theorize that the age-related decline in testosterone production may lead to an enlarged prostate, while others believe that high levels of the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone are to blame. Men who have a family history of prostate conditions, are overweight or have erectile dysfunction are at an increased risk of developing BPH.

Treatment

Many treatments are available for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Depending on the patient’s age, symptoms and overall health, BPH treatment may include:

  • Aquablation therapy uses the power of water delivered with robotic precision, to provide long-lasting BPH relief. It is precise, consistent, and predictable, and provides long-term relief no matter how large your prostate.
  • Medications to help relax bladder and prostate muscles or prevent BPH-related hormonal changes
  • Minimally invasive procedures and therapies to reduce or remove excess prostate tissue, such as laser therapy and transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) surgery
  • A watchful-waiting approach, if symptoms are mild and tolerable
