The Greater Hudson Valley Health System (GHVHS) is a New York State, not-for-profit corporation headquartered in Middletown, New York. It is currently the active parent company for two member hospitals – Catskill Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Center, and two medical groups - Catskill Regional Medical Group and Orange Regional Medcial Group, and Catskill Regional and Orange Regional Medical Center Foundations.
Providing healthcare to nearly 450,000 residents in Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties, the GHVHS was designed to improve the quality, stability and efficiency of healthcare services in the mid-Hudson and Catskill region.
The GHVHS is dedicated to developing specialty services, medical programs and needed healthcare services that allow residents to remain close to home to receive quality care. Services provided by more than 3,300 employed professionals and over 850 medical staff members, makes the GHVHS one of the largest healthcare providers in the tri-county area.

We, at the Greater Hudson Valley Health System, are always looking for ways to improve the overall experience for our patients, as well as improve efficiency and reduce overall costs. Sustainability initiatives offer significant environmental and financial benefits for our hospitals that can help our system thrive in the future.
According to a report by the Health Research & Educational Trust (2014, May), “sustainability can be defined as the ability of a system to continue doing what it is doing over time. In recent years, society has increased its focus on being “green” and becoming more environmentally friendly. To be truly sustainable, however, initiatives must stand the test of time by being fiscally sound while also helping the community and the environment. Hospitals and care systems that pursue sustainability initiatives find benefits in multiple areas. Their efforts contribute to a healthier environment, improve the organization’s public perception and can help their local communities. Environmental sustainability is also good business, as it helps lower operational costs and allows hospitals to direct more resources to patient care.”
Our Approach to Sustainability and Anticipating Societal Impacts
GHVHS works very closely with the community it serves to address and anticipate societal impacts and public concerns. Approaches include the following:
- Routine community two-way forums including face-to-face meetings- general public and specialty/ population specific sessions, electronic means- email, social media, blogs, web-interface to identify service offerings
- Collaborating with the community to improve services including reducing readmissions and primary care medical home
- Community-strategic analysis/assessments
- Comprehensive supply-chain management processes
- Environmental risk/ building / construction assessments/ impact; annual Environment of Care Plans addressing utilities, security, fire safety and emergency management (recognized as a leader in regional preparedness activities)

Enhancing Societal Wellbeing
Orange Regional Medical Center has been named Soliant’s Most Beautiful Hospital in the U.S. for 2017.
On September 19, 2016 Orange Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Group held a Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony in celebration of the official opening of a new Outpatient Building, as well as a new Spagnoli Family Cancer Center. This project included an exciting new 153,000 square foot, five-story Medical Office Building and a 26,000 square-foot, single-story Cancer Center at the hospital’s main campus.
The new buildings opened on September 26, 2016 and the $99 million project helped us relocate most outpatient services currently provided at other off-campus locations into new, state-of-the-art buildings on the existing 73-acre hospital campus in Middletown. Both new buildings are patient-centered healing environments incorporating advanced technology and amenities for patients and families. An additional 800 convenient parking spaces have been added to accommodate patients, doctors and employees.
New Outpatient Building
The first two floors of the Outpatient Building house an array of advanced diagnostic medical technology available including:
- 64-Slice Computerized Tomography (CT)
- 1.5 Tesla Wide-Bore Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
- Digital X-ray
- Nuclear Medicine
- Positron Emission Tomography
The Women’s Breast Center features all 3D Mammography, the most advanced imaging available for breast cancer detection.
The Outpatient Building also features urgent care, primary care, outpatient laboratory services, and pre-surgical testing. The building houses four outpatient operating rooms, endoscopy services, five procedure rooms, cardiac rehabilitation, a diabetes care center, medical school classrooms, a retail pharmacy, a bistro, and a community health resource center. Floors three to five are occupied by Orange Regional Medical Group specialty physicians.
Spagnoli Family Cancer Center
The 26,000 square-foot Spagnoli Family Cancer Center offers outpatient cancer therapy services including:
Along with oncology exam rooms, Patient Navigators, Clinical Trials, a Healing Boutique, Caring Arts Modalities (Complementary Therapies), and a healing garden. The single-story Spagnoli Family Cancer Center is attached to the main hospital building.
In addition, The ORMC Foundation has funded a Fitness Trail project on the campus with outdoor exercise stations as part of a $3.3 million “The Future is Orange” Campaign which helped to fund the overall expansion project. The walking and exercise path can be used by patients, families, and staff to promote overall good health.
First Urgent Care Location in Sullivan County
On May 25, 2017, Catskill Regional Medical Group (CRMG) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the official grand opening of its newest facility, Urgent Care & Primary Care at Resorts World Catskills. With the opening of Urgent Care and Primary Care at Resorts World Catskills, Catskill Regional Medical Group is proud to offer access to quality medical care to our neighbors in Sullivan County and surrounding areas. This facility is another step forward with our commitment to delivering patient-focused care for a healthier community.
Conservation of Our Natural Resources
GHVHS is dedicated to conservation of our natural resources. As such, many projects have been undertaken:
- 56% of Municipal Waste Stream is currently being recycled & diverted out of landfills
- 270 tons of single stream recycled in 2013 (6% increase from 2012)
- Reduced Regulated Medical Waste to <0.89 lbs per Adjusted Patient Day
- "Shred All" paper recycling saved 5,454 trees in 2013 (9% increase from 2012)
- Utilizing dogs to chase control geese population at retention ponds in lieu of chemicals
- Occupancy lighting sensors installed in all major conference rooms (1-7)
- EVS Initiated a "blue wrap" recycling initiative in the OR in 2014
- Energy Star on-line Portfolio Manager - increased efficiency from 64% to 67% since implementation of Energy Conservation and Sustainability Committee, December 2013
GHVHS is the largest non-governmental employer in the area, and has a significant impact on the social and economic systems of the community.
Serving the Community & Leading by Example
GHVHS leadership members serve on various local and national committees ranging from ACS on the national level to Boards of Education locally. In return, community members serve an integral part of the operations on the organization through various mechanisms, including serving on the Board of Directors, the Bioethics Committee, and the Patient Family Advisory Committee (PFAC).
In 2016, Scott Batulis, President and CEO of the GHVHS was a panelist at the “Hudson Valley Ed & Meds Power Panel” presented by the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation. The event addressed regional health care and higher education growth and collaboration.
Jonathan Schiller, CEO Catskill Regional Medical Center, was a panelist at the Orange County Health Equity Conference in February 2017.
Rosemary Baczewski, GHVHS Chief Clinical Officer, will be a speaker at the Healthcare CXO Summit on October 15-17, in California.
Joanne Ritter-Teitel, PhD, VP, Patient Care Services & CNO, GHVHS, President of the New York Organization of Nurse Executives and Leaders (NYONEL) whose mission is to engage, inspire, and advance the practice of New York nursing and emerging leaders.
Rolland “Boomer” Bojo, Vice President Patient Care Services & CNO at Catskill Regional Medical Center and Administrator of Grover M. Hermann Hospital, serves as Fire Chief of the Hancock Fire Dept, Deputy Coordinator for Emergency Services County of Delaware, and active EMT and Vice President of the Town of Hancock EMS.
Brian Tew, Chief Information Officer and VP of Professional Services is a member of the Health Information Management Systems Society; where he serves as a member of their Executive Institute and sits on the local chapter’s Privacy, Security & Compliance Committee. Mr. Tew also serves as a member of the advisory panel to HealthSystemCIO.com. In addition to being named a ‘top 100 community hospital CIO to know’ by Becker’s Healthcare Review, he is also a member of the Troop 105 BSA Committee in Middletown, NY.
Community and Collaboration
The GHVHS collaborates with organizations, schools, public agencies and businesses to educate the public, shift policy, and create a culture of health for the communities we serve. It is our goal to engage and influence other sectors while providing leadership for dynamic, large scale change.
In 2016 A University of Wisconsin Public Health Institute report published that:
- Only 10% of health can be attributed to clinical care
- 40% has been attributed to social and economic factors
- 30% to health behaviors
- 10% to environmental factors
By committing to community health work, the Greater Hudson Valley Health System will be a key driver to improving health and reducing chronic disease in our communities.
We are pleased to be able to provide health resources and education to our community in an effort to improve the health of families and support wellness proactively through promotion of healthy lifestyles; research; free classes, seminars, support groups and screenings; training and disease prevention. We also participate in and sponsor numerous community events including, but not limited to, participation and sponsorship of health fairs, walks/runs, conferences and various health-related efforts presented by other not-for-profit organizations in our community.

Healthy Food Drive
Orange Regional Medical Center, in partnership with Eat Smart New York – a Cornell Cooperative Extension program, collected healthy food donations from January 3 to January 20, 2017. The Nourish Your Neighbor healthy food drive stuffed a van on January 20 with boxes of donated healthy food items.
In conjunction with the American Heart Association and Ayo Fitness, the GHVHS has developed a program called Warrior Kids which is designed to inspire children to develop lifelong healthy habits through education, fitness and fun! Each week, participants of the program benefit from a 30-minute educational session followed by a 30-minute high-energy workout, both led by an accomplished fitness instructor. The program emphasizes the 5-2-1-Almost None formula for being a healthy kid:
- Eat 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day
- No more than 2 hours of screen time per day
- Get 1 hour of physical activity per day
- Almost None of your drinks are sugary beverages
Warrior Kids is offered to large groups of campers or students for four consecutive weeks. Each child who completes the program receives a certificate and a free Warrior Kids gift bag.
The Benefits of Breastfeeding
National Breastfeeding Month is celebrated every year in August to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world. Both ORMC and CRMC held events in 2017 to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and share experiences with fellow breastfeeding mothers.
Early diagnosis and cancer treatment is critical to improving outcomes. We offer several free cancer screenings to our community throughout the year, as well as year-round early detection cancer programs. Programs include breast, skin, prostate, lung and oral, head & neck cancer screenings.
Donating Life-Saving Technology to our Local Police Department
In August 2017, Orange Regional Medical Center donated two Physio-Control LIFEPAK 1000 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the Town of Wallkill Police Department to help first responders potentially save heart attack victims while in the field.
Emergency Care Institute
In honor of its commitment to the local community and to protect the lives and enhance safety, Catskill Regional Medical Center created and sponsored a free seminar for Emergency Medical Service Paramedics to assist local Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Paramedics in Sullivan County to meet their requirements for New York State certification.
Community Cyber Security Training
In May 2017, Orange Regional Medical Center held a Red Team Cyber Security Training Seminar for the Mid-Hudson School Study Council, which represents five counties and 25 school districts. The purpose of the training is for organizations to learn best practices and tools needed to mitigate exposure to cyber breaches and security lapses.
Cancer Survivors Day
Orange Regional Medical Center’s Spagnoli Family Cancer Center hosts an annual celebration of life in conjunction with National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD). This free event is open to anyone that has been diagnosed with cancer, is in treatment for cancer or has completed cancer therapy, as well as their friends, family members and caregivers.
Annual Health & Craft Fair
Each year, CRMC’s Grover M. Hermann Hospital Auxiliary sponsors a free Health & Children’s Fair for the community at the critical access hospital in Callicoon. The fair features free health screenings, health information booths and presentations, craft fair, a flea market, vendors, raffles, a 50/50 drawing, a bake sale, refreshments and live entertainment.
Hurricane Relief Efforts
In September 2017, Charles Miller, RN at CRMC traveled to the Houston area with OPERATION ENDEAVOR, a 5-man Rescue Team that pitched in to help people in the areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. Charles joined the deployment team as they help to augment ongoing rescue efforts and assess displaced populations. CRMC donated medical supplies, including a suitcase-sized container of 4x4 bandages, gauze, IV fluid, sterile water and topical antibiotics. Since September, both CRMC and ORMC have donated four pallets of medical and other supplies to support relief efforts in Houston.

Becker's Hospital Review Names Dr. Gerard Galarneau Among Top Physician Leaders to Know in 2017.
Becker's Hospital Review has named Dr. Gerard Galarneau in the 2017 edition of its Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems list. The list features hospital and health system presidents and CEOs who also hold medical degrees. These physicians have accomplished clinical careers, giving them unique insight into the healthcare industry.
Catskill Regional Medical Center Receives National Accreditation by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.
The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) has given accreditation to the cancer program at Catskill Regional Medical Center. To earn voluntary CoC accreditation, a cancer program must meet or exceed the CoC quality care standards, be evaluated every three years through a survey process, and maintain levels of excellence in the delivery of comprehensive patient-centered care.
Community Health Needs Assessment
GHVHS recognized that healthy communities lead to lower healthcare costs, robust community partnership and an overall enhanced quality-of-life. GHVHS completed a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) in 2016 to evaluate the health needs and behaviors in our service areas. GHVHS examined a variety of risky health behaviors and chronic health conditions.
There were data collection sessions with community members and focus groups with key community stakeholders. A CHNA Needs Prioritization Session was held and as a result priorities were set. These serve as the basis for long-term and short-term strategies and tactics for daily operations.
Graduate Medical Education
The mission of the Graduate and Undergraduate Medical Education Program at Orange Regional Medical Center is to prepare residents and students to be excellent physicians and well-developed individuals by educating them in the fundamental concepts, knowledge, and practical applications of skills taught by a team of dedicated medical professionals.
An Orange Regional residency offers a state-of-the-art facility, enthusiastic faculty and an academic neighbor in Touro Medical College who has a campus within a few miles of the hospital. Dedicated to the principles of Osteopathic medicine, our partnership with Touro Medical College provides additional opportunities to offer a dynamic educational experience.
In 2017, Orange Regional Medical Center celebrated its Department of Graduate Medical Education's first commencement of Family Medicine residents, Dr. AnnaMaria Arias and Dr. David Morcos, as well as a graduation ceremony for eight residents in its Traditional Rotation Internship.
Sustainability in the Workforce
We count on the excellence of our employees to drive our vision of exceptional health care in our community. In addition to tradition healthcare benefits, to keep our workforce healthy, we offers free vaccinations and health screenings to our employees, and often invite onsite representatives to assist with financial planning and supplemental benefits. Also offered is a comprehensive Lifescope program that assists with various personal items or issues, from elder care to tutoring services for children and career building skills.
Employee Recognition Programs
One of our employee recognition awards, The BEE Award, celebrates members of our hospital family who demonstrate excellence in their interactions with patients, visitors, colleagues and the community.
Fitness and Healthy Eating
The hospitals offer several wellness programs, including Step up to Fitness, with aerobic and training classes offered at a discounted rate and often on hospital grounds. Also offered is a farm share offering produce from nearby farms with deliveries made to the hospital staff.
ORMC implements an annual engagement survey that includes employees and physicians. Following the survey, Leaders share results with their teams and create action plans. Staff and leaders work together to identify one strength and one opportunity from each unit, based on their results and craft action plans that are staff driven, with each plan unique to the individual unit and the employee’s opinions on which survey items they deemed most important. Plans drafted utilizing DMAIIC process, correlate to survey questions, and are submitted online and worked on throughout the year.

Process Efficiency and Effectiveness
Operation costs within our GHVHS hospitals and medical groups are reviewed and monitored on a regular basis and shared from the top down. On a monthly basis and when necessary, variances in budget items are investigated, explained and communicated through the appropriate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. ORMC is an active member of Premier, a Group Purchasing Organizations (GPO) to leverage national buying power.
EPIC EHR reinforces evidence-based practice and standardized medication and testing orders. Workflow and processes are developed using best practice and evidence based methods to reduce risk and minimize patient harm. Specialized and focused training, including tip sheets, assist in workflow modification. Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) streamlines the process, reducing error. Highly effective, proactive system checks, on all equipment are built into all technology driven areas. Reports and audit trails are regularly provided through a robust preventive maintenance (PM) schedule including an electronic work order system.
